yeah, they should really take them down.

and now they have zone by phone as a nicer alternative.

and was it because of technical problems i think, they couldn't support the upgrade or something

The trouble with the Zone's Ventrilo server came with VT3.0 because the site could no longer interact with the program as it needed too. You see for starters, when ever a new account was created on the zone, that account was also automatically setup on the Ventrilo server. Now this functionality was either no longer available in 3.0, or the admins couldn't work out how to make it work but either way, what it would have meant was that for every new user, a community leader would then have to go to Ventrilo and manually set up the account to allow access. It also would have meant that every time somebody had their account disabled, then again, that account would then have to be disabled manually by somebody on Ventrilo too. And of course if it were only a temporary ban, yep, I suspect you've guessed it by now, a community leader would have to go and reenable access to the VT server.

When you consider that their maybe a dozen or more accounts created a week on this site, it just wasn't feasible to keep the server running as a stand-alone project like that.

Personally I think it's a shame because I was a big fan of Ventrilo. I don't consider the phone system to come even close as a replacement though I'm aware that many do love it.

Apologies for the double message in that last post by the way. I typed that message elsewhere and pasted it and it evidently pasted twice for reasons unknown.

Oh and I couldn't tell you when we stopped using VT on this site. When ever VT3 happened though was when it happened. Mid to late 07 would be my guess.

whenever vt 3.0 came out, I don't remember when that was. But I miss the good old days of VT. I can't understand people on the phone as well, it's awful quality. Was vt3.0 a forced upgrade? Couldn't the site have stayed with the older version?

So far as I know Cala VT3 was a forced upgrade yes, well in a manor of speaking it was anyway. I know of some servers that are still running that haven't upgraded, but I think those servers must be hosted from people's machines instead of remotely. For a 25 slot Ventrilo server, which the Zone's one was I believe, it really needed to be hosted remotely because of the bandwidth requirements. That meant that if the company doing the hosting upgraded to the VT3 server software, then the client had to follow.

So technically you're not forced to upgrade by the company making Ventrilo, but if the hosting company upgraded at their end, which all did so far as I'm aware, it amounted to the same thing as being forced.

I think Flagship forced all hosting companies to upgrade by revoking earlier licenses.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but from what I heard, there were some people that had problems with the server in terms of getting knocked off of it randomly. This may also be a reason why the discontinued it.

Not true. People being kicked from servers happens from time to time with all Ventrilo servers for a variety of reasons. However that had nothing to do with the site losing it's Ventrilo server. The reasons for that have already been spelled out above.
